Synopsis
This novel continues the contest between George Smiley, recalled from the margins of the British Secret Service, and his Soviet opposite Karla. An elderly Estonian emigre is found murdered in London; a hidden photograph and a network of old agents pull Smiley from retirement into Germany, Paris, and the logic of a private hold over Karla. Bureaucracy, tradecraft, and the damage done to people used as instruments occupy the foreground. The book is a Cold War espionage novel of a last pursuit, not a general history of the intelligence services.
