This Discworld novel is set in the theocratic city of Omnia, where the Great God Om has dwindled to a one-eyed tortoise because belief has become institutional habit. His last true believer is Brutha, a novice with a perfect memory and no talent for doctrine. As Deacon Vorbis drives an inquisition and a war against the philosophers of Ephebe, Brutha must carry the god, question the Church, and survive desert and palace. The book is a comic fantasy about belief, power, and a religion that has forgotten its deity, not a theological tract and not a battlefield chronicle.
