Gwenda Reed, a young New Zealander newly settled in England, buys a house in Dillmouth and is haunted by the memory of a strangled woman in the hall. With her husband Giles she turns to Jane Marple, who helps them reconstruct an event from Gwenda's early childhood involving her father's second wife, Helen. The investigation runs through old theatrical connections, a local doctor, and the question of who was in the house that night. The house's wallpaper, stairs, and garden path become evidence rather than mere setting. The novel is a Miss Marple mystery of recovered memory, not a supernatural tale.
