Synopsis

First published in 1969, this novel follows Billy Pilgrim, a hapless American chaplain's assistant who is captured in the Second World War, survives the Allied firebombing of Dresden while locked in a slaughterhouse, and later claims to have come unstuck in time. His life as an optometrist in Ilium, his abduction to the planet Tralfamadore, and the Dresden nights are told out of chronological order. A narrator who shares the author's war service frames the story. The book is an anti-war fiction of trauma and time, not a conventional campaign history.
