Synopsis
First published in 1870-71, this short novel is set at Humblethwaite in Cumberland after the death of Sir Harry's only son. The baronetcy will pass to a charming, indebted cousin, Captain George Hotspur, while Sir Harry means the estate to go with his daughter Emily and a respectable husband. George courts Emily to unite title and land; she loves him and believes she can reform him, yet has promised not to marry without her father's consent. The book is a domestic tragedy of inheritance and will, not a political Palliser novel.
