This Latin epic, composed in the late first century BCE, follows the Trojan survivor Aeneas after the fall of Troy. Driven by a prophecy that he will found a people in Italy, he leads a remnant of Trojans across the Mediterranean, is delayed in Carthage by his love for Queen Dido, and descends to the underworld to see the future of Rome. The second half of the poem is a war in Latium: Aeneas seeks alliance and marriage with Lavinia, while Turnus, prince of the Rutulians, contests that claim. Gods take sides throughout. The poem is both a founding myth of Rome and an account of the costs of that destiny.
