This collection gathers Jane Austen's fiction outside the six completed novels: the epistolary Lady Susan, in which a worldly widow manoeuvres among the Vernons; the unfinished The Watsons and Sanditon; the mock History of England; and early pieces from the 1790s juvenilia, among them Love and Freindship, Catharine, Lesley Castle, Evelyn, and short burlesques such as Jack and Alice and The Three Sisters. The shorter works run from family satire and sentimental parody to the seaside fragment left at her death in 1817. Recurring concerns are courtship, money, female ingenuity, and the exposure of fashionable cant. The volume is a miscellany of complete tales, fragments, and youthful experiments, not a single novel.
