This collection gathers the short fiction Kipling wrote from the 1880s into the early twentieth century. Typical settings are British India, the sea, Sussex, and the army: civil servants, privates, animals who speak, and children who know more than adults. Recurring subjects are work, hierarchy, revenge, and the costs of rule. Some groups form cycles, such as the Soldiers Three or the jungle tales; others stand alone. The book is a body of independent stories, not a novel of empire and not a single children's sequence.
