Short Stories

Synopsis

This collection gathers the short stories Wells published from the 1890s into the early twentieth century. Typical pieces mix scientific speculation with social comedy: invisibility, time travel, new weapons, island experiments, and suburban men who meet an invention or a visitor they cannot control. Other stories are plain tales of shopkeepers, cyclists, and social climbers. Settings move from laboratories and the English countryside to the future and the moon. The book is a miscellany of independent tales, not a single scientific romance and not a treatise on progress.
