Synopsis
First serialised in 1844, this historical novel follows d'Artagnan, a poor young Gascon who comes to Paris to join the king's musketeers and instead befriends three of them: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Together they are drawn into the contest between Louis XIII's household and Cardinal Richelieu, a contest that also involves the Duke of Buckingham and the agent known as Milady de Winter. Duels, disguises, and a mission concerning the queen's jewellery drive the plot. The book is an adventure of honour and faction in the France of the 1620s.
