First published in 1975, this historical novel follows John Blackthorne, an English pilot whose Dutch ship is wrecked on the coast of Japan around 1600. Taken into the household of the daimyo Toranaga, he becomes a pawn and a useful specialist in a struggle among feudal lords that will decide who rules the country. Blackthorne must learn the language, the codes of honor and cleanliness, and the uses of the Jesuit mission and the Portuguese traders. Mariko, a Christian interpreter, is his guide and ally. The book is a political epic of first contact and civil war, not a textbook of the samurai code.
