First published in 1936, this is the third volume of Sassoon's fictionalized war memoirs, narrated by George Sherston. It opens with Sherston in a military hospital after his public protest against the continuation of the First World War, then follows his treatment at a shell-shock hospital under a doctor modeled on W. H. R. Rivers, his return to the front in France, and the last campaigns before the Armistice. Hunting memories and army routine sit beside fear and fatigue. The book is a first-person novel of recovery and return to the line, not a treatise on psychiatry.
