This book is a report on the last years of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's rule in Iran and on the revolution that drove him out. Kapuscinski works from photographs, street talk, and the residue of the secret police, oil wealth, and forced modernisation, assembling scenes of Tehran, the court, and the crowds rather than a day-by-day chronicle. He treats the Shah's state as a theatre of fear and display that suddenly ceases to command belief. The work is literary reportage, not a full biography of the Pahlavis and not a military history of the war that followed.
