This illustrated history follows the Alhambra of Granada from its Nasrid building in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries through the Christian conquest of 1492 and the palace's afterlife as ruin, romantic destination, and restored monument. Trevelyan recounts the last Muslim kingdom in Spain, the courts of Ferdinand and Isabel, and the later visitors and writers who turned the site into a legend of gardens, fountains, and lost chivalry. Appendices list Nasrid sultans and kings of Castile. The book is a narrative of one palace and its kingdom, not a general history of Islamic Spain.
