Synopsis
This memoir, first issued in 1933, is the navigator Frank Worsley's account of taking the James Caird from Elephant Island to South Georgia in 1916, after Shackleton's Endurance had been crushed in the ice. Worsley records the boat's launch, the navigation by sextant in heavy seas, the landing on the uninhabited coast, and the overland march with Shackleton and Crean to the Stromness whaling station to fetch help for the men left behind. The book stays with that boat journey and rescue, not with the earlier drift on the pack or a complete expedition history.
