This collection brings together Shackleton's two polar narratives. The Heart of the Antarctic recounts the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909: the voyage of Nimrod, the winter at Cape Royds, and the southern march that turns back short of the Pole. South recounts the Endurance expedition of 1914-1917: the ship's crushing in the Weddell Sea pack, the camp on the ice, the boat journey to Elephant Island, and the open-boat crossing to South Georgia to fetch relief. The volume is a pair of expedition memoirs, not a biography of the later Quest voyage.
