First published in 1934, this is a collection of seven long stories set mostly in nineteenth-century Europe - in Denmark, Italy, and imagined courts - and told with framed narrators, masks, and sudden revelations of identity. Aristocrats, cardinals, opera singers, and adventurers recount nights of flood, duel, and bargain; the gothic element is atmosphere and fate more than horror machinery. Typical subjects are pride, disguise, and the stories people tell about their own pasts. There is no continuous novel. The book is a suite of romantic tales, not a guidebook to the Gothic Revival.
