First published in 1811, this novel follows the Dashwood sisters after their father's death leaves them dependent on a half-brother and forces a move from Norland to a Devonshire cottage. Elinor, who governs her feelings, is attached to Edward Ferrars, whose family has other plans; Marianne, who scorns concealment, gives her heart to the dashing Willoughby and ignores the older Colonel Brandon. Visits to London expose secret engagements and public slights. The book is a comedy of manners that tests two styles of feeling against the marriage market and the need for a respectable income.
