This selection of W. B. Yeats's poems runs from the late-nineteenth-century Irish legendary pieces through the political and occult lyrics of the middle years to the starker poems of old age. Recurring figures include Maud Gonne, Irish revolutionaries, Byzantium, and the wild old wicked man; recurring places are Sligo, Dublin, and invented holy cities. The book is a career cross-section of lyric and sequence, not a play and not a history of the Rising. Paintings by Jack B. Yeats accompany some editions, but the literary work is the verse.
