Synopsis
This selection combines the poems Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote mainly in the 1870s and 1880s with a sampling of his journals, letters, and spiritual notes. The verse uses sprung rhythm and compacted sound to treat weather, birds, wreck, and religious desolation, including the ode on the Deutschland and the late sonnets of dryness. The prose records walks, parish work, and arguments about metre and vocation. There is no plot. The volume is a dual sampler of lyric experiment and private writing, not a biography and not a theological summa.
