This selection gathers lyrics, odes, and extracts from the longer poems Wordsworth wrote from the 1790s into the nineteenth century. Short pieces treat childhood, graves, solitaries, and the Lake District; conversation poems recover memory beside the Wye or on Westminster Bridge. Passages from The Prelude follow a mind formed by landscape, Cambridge, and the French Revolution. The book is a cross-section of blank verse and stanza, not a continuous autobiography and not a treatise on poetic theory, though the poems themselves keep returning to how feeling and natural objects instruct the speaker.
