This selection draws from the lyrics and narrative poems Frost published in the first half of the twentieth century, many of them set in the farms, woods, and stone-walled roads of New England. Speakers stop by woods, mend walls, hire help, bury children, and talk across fences; longer pieces follow a hired man, a witch of Coos, or a conversation in snow. The poems use blank verse and regular stanzas, and they present rural work and neighborly argument rather than city life. Recurring subjects are choice, labor, isolation, and the weather of a northern year. The volume is a cross-section of a single poet's books, not a continuous story.
