This selection presents the poems Coleridge wrote mainly in the 1790s and the first years of the nineteenth century: the supernatural narratives of the Ancient Mariner, Christabel, and Kubla Khan; conversation poems addressed to friends in cottages and at midnight; and political and personal odes. Speakers move from guilt and blessing at sea to domestic quiet and to ruined pleasure-domes. There is no single plot. The volume is a gathering of ballad, fragment, and meditative blank verse, not a philosophical textbook, though ideas of nature, will, and imagination run through the pieces.
