This historical novel follows Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist and Nazi party member, who operates enamel and munitions workshops in occupied Cracow and later at Brunnlitz, employing Jewish workers from the ghetto and from Plaszow camp. The narrative sets Schindler's deals, bribes, and factory lists against the administration of Amon Goeth and the machinery of deportation. Itzhak Stern and other prisoners appear as counterparts to Schindler's opportunism and gradual protectiveness. The book is documentary fiction based on survivor testimony, not a general history of the Holocaust.
