This three-volume social history reconstructs ordinary medieval life by concentrating on one well-documented place in each book: the Champagne fair city of Troyes around 1250, the English village of Elton in Huntingdonshire, and Chepstow Castle on the Anglo-Welsh border. The authors use household accounts, court rolls, and building evidence to describe work, food, law, worship, and the ranks of merchants, peasants, and castle households. The emphasis is on daily institution rather than on kings and battles. The set is popular scholarly reconstruction, not a chronicle of the Crusades or a general political history of the Middle Ages.
