Synopsis
This fragmentary Latin novel of the first century follows Encolpius, a wandering scholar-rogue, through the cities of southern Italy with his companion Giton and a shifting set of rivals and hangers-on. The longest surviving episode is the dinner of Trimalchio, a wealthy freedman whose vulgar feast is a satire of new money and bad taste. Other episodes mix verse and prose, shipwreck, impotence, and confidence tricks. The work is a picaresque comic narrative in the Menippean manner, not a moral treatise and not a complete surviving book: large stretches are lost.
