This anthology collects short fiction by Russian writers from the nineteenth century into the Soviet period. Typical pieces include society tales, peasant sketches, garrison and prison stories, and later work of revolution, civil war, and exile. Recurring settings are Petersburg drawing rooms, provincial towns, army posts, and communal apartments; recurring concerns are conscience, authority, and the gap between official language and private life. Authors range from the classic novelists of the imperial decades to Babel, Nabokov, and later witnesses. The book is a sampler of independent stories, not a history of Russia and not a single framed cycle.
