This selection of Brooke's poems, written in the decade before his death in 1915, moves from Cambridge and Grantchester lyrics to the war sonnets of 1914. Early pieces treat love, swimming, islands, and English villages in a conversational, sometimes satirical voice. Later sonnets address enlistment, death, and an idealised England the speaker expects to serve. There is no narrative through-line. The book is a short lyric gathering rather than a war chronicle, and it shows a Georgian poet of place and feeling more than a battlefield reporter.
