A Canticle for Leibowitz

By Walter M. Miller Jr · 2024

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

After a nuclear war has wrecked North American civilisation, a monastic order in the southwestern desert preserves fragments of pre-war technical knowledge associated with a technician named Isaac Leibowitz. The novel moves through three widely separated ages. In the first, the novice Francis finds relics in the ruins and is drawn into Leibowitz's path toward sainthood. In the second, a scholar and an abbot argue as secular science revives and a new state gathers power. In the third, the order faces another technological climax and must decide whether recovered learning can be held without repeating the old destruction.
