This tragedy, printed in 1597 and set in Verona, follows the children of the feuding houses of Montague and Capulet. Romeo meets Juliet at a Capulet feast; they marry in secret with the help of Friar Laurence and the nurse. A street fight kills Mercutio and Tybalt and sends Romeo into exile. A forced match with County Paris, a sleeping potion, and a failed message drive the last act at the tomb. Comic servants and the nurse's talk sit beside the lovers' verse. The play is a city tragedy of family feud and haste, not a political history.
