First published in 1939, this thriller is told by an English hunter who, just before the Second World War, stalks a European dictator for sport and is caught, tortured, and left for dead. He crawls back to England, finds himself hunted in turn by an enemy agent, and goes to ground in the Dorset countryside, living in an excavated hole in the earth. A cat and a village girl enter a story otherwise stripped to pursuit. The narrator never names the dictator. The book is a first-person chase novel about isolation and fieldcraft, not a political history of the 1930s.
