Robinson Crusoe
The Life and Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe of York
By Daniel Defoe · 1972
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1719, this novel is the first-person narrative of Robinson Crusoe, an Englishman who ignores his father's advice, goes to sea, is enslaved, escapes, and is wrecked alone on an island off South America. He salvages tools from the ship, builds a fortified dwelling, keeps a calendar, raises goats and crops, and undergoes a religious conversion. After many years he finds a footprint, fights cannibals, and gains a companion he names Friday. A later rescue returns him to Europe and to further travel. The book is an adventure and spiritual autobiography in fictional form, not a travel journal of a real castaway.
