First published in 1817, this novel is narrated by Francis Osbaldistone, a young Englishman sent north to his uncle's house in Northumberland and then into Scotland around the 1715 Jacobite rising. He meets the cattle dealer and outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor, becomes entangled with his cousin Rashleigh and with Die Vernon, and is drawn into Highland raids, Glasgow business, and the politics of Hanoverian and Jacobite allegiance. Much of the action sits on the Highland Line rather than at court. The book is a historical romance of travel, family fraud, and a famous brigand, not a biography of Rob Roy.
