First published in 1960, this memoir recounts Gavin Maxwell's life at a remote house on the West Highland coast and his keeping of otters, first Mijbil, brought from the marshes of Iraq, and later others. He describes the cottage, the sea loch, the work of feeding and housing animals that are neither pets nor livestock, and the local people and landscape. Journeys to the Middle East and the difficulties of otters in a human house sit beside days of swimming and fishing. The book is a personal account of place and animals, not a zoological treatise.
