Seward recounts the life of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, from the Wars of the Roses through his brief reign and death at Bosworth in 1485. He treats the disappearance of the princes in the Tower, the Buckingham revolt, and the Tudor charge of tyranny, and argues that the black legend has a substantial basis in contemporary report. Earlier service in the north and the usurpation of 1483 occupy the middle chapters. The book is a narrative biography written against more sympathetic modern revisions, not a study of Yorkist administration as a whole.
