This history play, printed in 1597, follows Richard, Duke of Gloucester, as he removes rivals between the death of his brother Edward IV and his own fall at Bosworth. He woos Lady Anne, isolates the Woodvilles, takes the crown, and deals with Buckingham, Hastings, and the princes in the Tower. Margaret's curses and the ghosts before the last battle frame the action as a reckoning. Richmond arrives as the Tudor opponent. The play is a tragic history of usurpation and conscience told through soliloquy and intrigue, not a documentary chronicle of 1483 to 1485.
