First published in 1968, this fantasy follows Ged, a boy of the island of Gont, whose gift for magic takes him to the school on Roke. Pride leads him to summon a spirit he cannot control; a shadow is loosed into the world and marks him. The novel then becomes a pursuit across the island-archipelago of Earthsea, among fishermen, dragons, and the rules that bind true names. Ged must learn the cost of power and the identity of what he has called up. It is an education story set in a sea of islands where language and being are tightly joined.
