First published in 1955, this biography reconstructs the life of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, from his Yorkist childhood through service under his brother Edward IV to the brief reign that ends at Bosworth in 1485. Kendall uses household records, letters, and chronicles to follow Richard in the north, the protectorate after Edward's death, the taking of the crown, and the rebellions that follow. He treats the fate of Edward IV's sons as an unsolved problem rather than as a settled crime. The book is a narrative life of a fifteenth-century king, not a study of Shakespeare's play.
