First published in 1927, this is Lawrence's abridgment of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, his narrative of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. He recounts joining Feisal's campaign in the Hejaz, the guerrilla raids on the Hejaz railway, the capture of Aqaba from the landward side, and the advance north toward Damascus with British and Arab forces. Camels, explosives, tribal politics, and his own position as a British officer among the Hashemites occupy the foreground. Much of the personal and philosophical material of the longer book is cut. It is a campaign memoir, not a general history of the war.
