Written in the late fourteenth century after a series of showings at Norwich in 1373, this book records Julian's sixteen visions of Christ's Passion and her later meditation on their meaning. She treats sin, prayer, and the motherhood of God, and holds that love is the ground of creation despite the fact of evil. Short-text and long-text versions survive; both are first-person theology rather than a saint's life. The famous assurance that all shall be well arises from the parable of the lord and the servant. The work is a medieval English mystical treatise, not a narrative of Norwich civic history.
