This collection gathers Orwell's principal non-fiction of the 1930s and early 1940s. Book-length pieces include the tramp and kitchen-porter memoir Down and Out in Paris and London; Homage to Catalonia, on fighting with a POUM militia in Spain and on the Barcelona street fighting; and The Road to Wigan Pier, on unemployment and housing in the industrial north and on English socialism. Two further volumes collect essays and journalism on politics, literature, patriotism, and wartime Britain. The writing mixes first-person observation with argument about class, language, and totalitarianism. The set is reportage and polemic, not the novels.
