First published in German in 1917, this book explains the special and general theories of relativity in consecutive chapters. Special relativity begins with two postulates: that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames and that the speed of light is constant. From these follow the relativity of simultaneity, time dilation, length contraction, and the equivalence of mass and energy. General relativity then treats gravity as equivalent to acceleration and as the curvature of spacetime, with tests such as the perihelion of Mercury and the deflection of starlight. Appendices add the more formal proofs. It is an exposition of physics, not a life of the author.
