Relativity
The Special and the General Theory, Albert Einstein, Authorised
By Albert Einstein · 2004
Back to CatalogueFirst issued in 1916, this is Einstein's own account of the special and general theories of relativity, written for readers who will follow an argument but not a textbook. The opening chapters start from the constant speed of light and the sameness of physical law in all inertial frames, then draw out the relativity of simultaneity, the behaviour of moving clocks and rods, and the equivalence of mass and energy. Later chapters introduce the equivalence of gravity and acceleration, curved spacetime, and consequences such as the bending of light and the gravitational shift of spectral lines. Short mathematical notes support the prose. The book is a popular scientific treatise, not a memoir.
