Reformation: Europe's House Divided 1490-1700
By Diarmaid MacCulloch · 2013
Back to CatalogueThis history follows Western Christianity from the late fifteenth century through the Protestant and Catholic reformations and on to about 1700. MacCulloch begins with the late medieval church, print, and humanist learning, then tracks Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, the English break with Rome, radical groups, and the Council of Trent. Later chapters cover confessional states, religious war, Orthodox churches, extra-European missions, and the settling of orthodoxies after Westphalia. Doctrine, politics, parish life, and gender are treated as parts of one upheaval rather than as a German event with side effects. It is a narrative survey of a divided Christendom, not a biography of any single reformer.
