Bill Bryson, returned to the United States after years in Britain, sets out to walk the Appalachian Trail from Georgia toward Maine with his overweight, unready school friend Stephen Katz. The narrative alternates days on the path-shelters, blisters, bears, boredom, and the comedy of two mismatched hikers-with essays on the eastern forest, the trail's making, and the towns that serve it. They abandon and resume stretches rather than completing every mile. The book is a comic travel account of a long American footpath and a survey of what logging, settlement, and conservation have done to the woods beside it.
