A Voyage Round the Coast of Great Britain
Undertaken in the Summer of the Year 1813 and Commencing from the Land's End, Cornwall
By William Daniell · 2008
Back to CatalogueUndertaken from 1813 and issued over the following decade, this illustrated coastal survey follows William Daniell, with Richard Ayton writing the early text, around the shoreline of Great Britain, beginning at Land's End. The journey, made by sea and road, records harbours, cliffs, fishing towns, and headlands county by county, while Daniell's aquatints fix the look of rock, weather, and shipping. Ayton's letterpress describes coastal work and living as well as scenery; later volumes continue the circuit in Daniell's own prose. The work is a topographical voyage in words and plates, not a novel of shipwreck or discovery.
