First published in 1906, this children's book follows Dan and Una, who act a scene from A Midsummer Night's Dream near their Sussex home and thereby summon Puck. He shows them figures from the hill's past: a Norman knight after Hastings, a Roman centurion on the Wall, a Jewish moneylender in medieval England, and craftsmen and smugglers of later centuries. Each encounter is a short tale of work, law, or invasion, framed by the children's summer. Songs close several chapters. The book is a sequence of historical visitations, not a single novel and not a textbook of English history.
