A Visit to Don Otavio
A Traveller's Tale from Mexico
By Sybille Bedford · 1990
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1953, this travel narrative follows Bedford and her companion E. from New York by train into Mexico, through the capital and provincial cities, to a long stay at a decaying lakeside hacienda on Lake Chapala. Their host, Don Otavio, a courteous bachelor of a reduced landowning family, lives among servants, relations, and schemes to save the house. Bedford describes trains, food, churches, expatriates, and the lake's weather, and makes shorter journeys to other Mexican towns. The book is a traveller's portrait of postwar Mexico, half report and half arranged tale, centred on one household.
