First published in 1813, this novel follows the Bennet household in Hertfordshire as five daughters face the entail that will leave them dependent if they do not marry. Elizabeth Bennet, quick-tongued and sure of her judgments, clashes with the proud Mr Darcy at a local assembly, while her sister Jane is drawn to Darcy's friend Bingley. The charming officer Wickham, the clergyman Mr Collins, and the formidable Lady Catherine complicate courtship and reputation. Visits to Rosings, London, and Pemberley force Elizabeth to revise what she thinks she knows of character and income. The book is a comedy of manners about marriage, class, and first impressions.
