First published in 1942, this group biography follows the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the later circle around William Morris from youthful alliance to divided later lives. Gaunt traces Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, and John Everett Millais from the 1848 compact through Ruskin's championship, Hunt's journeys to the Holy Land, Millais's marriage into the Ruskin story, and Rossetti's attachment to Elizabeth Siddal. A second generation brings Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, with their workshops, Iceland, and entangled households. The book treats paintings and poems as products of those friendships and feuds. It is narrative art history, not a catalogue of pictures.
